30 Day Anime Challenge!

Day 1: Very first anime

The first anime, series or movie, I can remember watching was Mamouru Oshii’s 1995 masterpiece ‘Ghost in the Shell’. I brought it it a DVD shop in my town, anime hadn’t taken off in the west to the scale it is now but I have always had an interest in it because of my art background. So I brought it thinking if I’m going to start it ay as well be with one of the biggest anime films there is, plus it was a bit lighter fair compared to Akira, which was my second, so it was a good entry into the genre. It’s a fantastic film that was a great blend of a more realistic future the is based more on where we are going in terms of development of a species rather than just the want of flying cars for the sale of it being futuristic. The statements made in the film about as technology develops and we as guans become more and more connected to it that there will come a point where we have to start asking the question are we loosing are humanity at the sacrifice of technology and if so, how human, if at all are we now. The film has influenced so many that have followed it, The Matrix (1999) being a big example of that. For any serious fan of animation, anime, technology or all of the above it is well worth the watch and with the ‘Ghost in the Shell 2.0’ revamp any elements that may have looked slightly dated are taken away leaving just a stunning piece of visual art. It’s a film that no matter how many times you watch it will give you questions to answer about it and yourself. 9/10

Most of the time theses days I’m fine, months and months can go by and everything will just be plodding along and then out of the blue I just get a sudden shock of reality, about everything that’s happened to me over the last few years, the pain I’ve endured, the gut retching feeling of standing on the edge of oblivion with no end in sight. You’d think after therapy and talking and everything else I’ve done I’d be fine by now, and for the most part I am, it’s just there are certain moments where it all comes back to the front of your mind and just stops you where you stand, sometimes I just go quiet, not wanting to talk or see someone, sometimes it brings me to my knees in tears. I just hits me just how on earth am I even here today, how did I endure all of that pain, that emotion.

Never ever take anything for granted, your friends, your family and loved ones, the smell of the out side world and just the breeze hitting your face.

Sorry, I don’t even know why I’m posting this, I think it just helps sometimes to talk about thing, even if it is just to myself as I type this.

A real Myst book

This is a project I’ve been working on for six years - a replica linking book from the video game Myst.

Inside the book is a full desktop computer, completely self-contained without any external wires or hardware. In the above photo, the embedded screen isn’t just showing a still photo or a video: it’s running a full copy of real Myst PC edition. On board is a copy of all the Myst games. It’s fast enough it plays all of them smoothly (even End of Ages at ~30fps). You play the games by touching the touch-screen.

This place may as well be the stair case to my own person...
